[hey. hey Jacobo. guess what?]

[not in the traditional sense, anyway. Magilou couldn't feel that sort of affection-- not the sort of surface fondness one has for those that they're close to. sure, she was legitimately fond of Laphicet in her own way. somewhere, deep down in her heart, she thought of him as her friend and comrade. for her own selfish reasons, for her own sake, she did not want to see him dead]
[but that part of her felt like being stabbed in the heart, over and over and over again. it was easier to focus on the rest]
I promised the kiddo I wouldn't tell anyone his story, so I won't bore you with the droll details.
But he needs to survive. For the sake of our entire world, he needs to live.

the universe is a complicated and vast place. it's tiring, sometimes.
jacopo is silent. he begins to turn, as though he's about to leave, but then suddenly stops. ]
He cares about you too, you know.

[and there it is]
[feelings (ugh) of actual caring (gross) and being reminded that there is at least one little twerp on this stupid island whose death would legitimately make her heart wrench with pain]
[she hates it. she hates it. what has she ever gained from caring about others? a miserable childhood. a heart ground to dust. a heart incapable of feeling anything except whimsical interest in whatever happened to catch her fancy]
[. . . a pack of comrades and misfits. a group of criminals, cast aside by the world. people who understood her desire to keep a distance, but still had her back, no matter the circumstances]
[her fingers curl tightly against her arm as she turns away, trying her best to pull back the indifference she had relied upon for so long]
He's a good kid.
