[WEEK 4, SATURDAY POST-TRIAL: Lief]
[so that happened]
[Jacopo and Laphicet are set to die, both of them extremely important people to both Magilou and Lief]
[Serph confessed to being a Siren, and got shot by Neku, who then died when his gun exploded]
[Magilou considers herself a realist, and a pessimist on her worst days. never an optimist. and with this series of events that just transpired? she can see their hope for a "good" ending to this game going right down the drain. perhaps. . . she should have bet on this from the very beginning, after all]
[. . . when she finds Lief, her demeanor is surprisingly (or perhaps not surprisingly, considering) muted]
Hey.
[yep. that's all she says]

Hey.
[yep. that's all she says]
no subject
[she hates reason. hates it more than anything else in the world. but in a game like this, she doesn't begrudge people for following it]
Hey, he was guilty, wasn't he?
[she shrugs]
He knew what he was getting himself into when he decided to kill.
no subject
Do you know why he did it?
no subject
[they had talked about it, before. his motives. the reasons why he'd become a killer on this island]
[but it was only today that she realized exactly how much his incentive would change. and she didn't like it]
He wanted to create an ideal world. . . where Velvet could be happy.
no subject
no subject
He thought the Chiefs must have the power, if they managed to bring people here from all sorts of universes. It wasn't an unsound theory.
[. . .]
And if the Chiefs weren't lying, his ideal world will soon become a reality.
[and, the thing that's been kicking her in the gut ever since she spoke to Jacopo and Laphicet post-trial]
It will be as though he and I never met.
no subject
Magilou...
[On instinct, he reaches out to touch her hand.]
no subject
. . .
He's a selfish kid. He'd do anything for Velvet-- the woman who gave him a name, a purpose, a reason to live. I get it. Everyone is a little bit selfish, no matter how much of a do-gooder they are.
[. . . heh]
I suppose that includes me. . . who would never want to be a part of a world where I never met him. Or anyone else.
no subject
Indeed. We are all selfish.
[Softly,]
... Just as how, though I should wish that you did not have to go through this game, I am glad to have had the chance to meet you.
no subject
[this time, it's her reaching out for his hand, a gentle brush of fingers against his knuckles. since when did she allow herself to become so physically affectionate? geez. . .]
Pain and suffering a part of being alive. Amidst all that. . . good things can grow.
no subject
You cannot be happy if you do not know what it is like to be otherwise.
no subject
[he doesn't know exactly how deeply that resonates with her, but. it does]
Emotions are. . . a real pain sometimes.
no subject
Better to suffer than to be completely empty.]
And this game knows it. Still, it is why we have to keep going.
no subject
[. . .]
[god. she knew he had a fire burning in him from the very beginning. perhaps she should have predicted her attraction to it would have brought them here]
You reacted the same way I did when Hal gave us that list of names.
no subject
no subject
[she sighs, and lifts a hand to brush her bangs aside]
Are you and Jacopo close?
no subject
... It is difficult to understand Jacopo at times, but I would like to think he thought of me as a friend.
no subject
It-- [. . .]
It hurts.
[she. she struggles with that. struggles to say those two words in tandem. despite their brevity, they reveal so much. . . and she knows it]
[it hurts, to lose a friend]
no subject
It does.
[It's a pain he's felt before, but it never really gets easier. If there is a day that it does, then perhaps by then, he's lost himself.]
... And it is why we have to fight all the harder for some semblance of a happy ending.
[Not a real one, because those don't exist. But the closest they can get.]
no subject
[and she nods]
You know what I've learned? Not just on this island, but through every single experience I've had in life?
[she grins, smile lopsided, but sharp]
Humans are resilient. They will always keep fighting, no matter what.
no subject
Lief gives a bit of a sharp smile of his own.]
If we did not, we would have died out quite some time ago, I think.
no subject
But still, humans persist. They fight against pain, and in some cases, embrace it as a method for driving them forward.
[. . .]
. . . did you know? For the longest time, I couldn't feel anything.
no subject
Lief gives her a look along the lines of keep going.]
no subject
My heart broke a long time ago. Shattered! Into a million tiny pieces, each one sharp enough to draw blood.
[she glosses over the reasons why, though. for now]
Emotions are a real pain, but not caring isn't really living. Sure, you don't hurt. You don't feel pain, or sadness, or anger, or suffering. You have no loyalties-- you can do whatever it is you want, free from the restraints of being human. It's what being a witch truly feels like.
[. . .]
But living such a way. . . isn't really living at all, you know? Laphicet is one of the people who taught me that.
no subject
I am glad he did.
no subject
Are you sure you can handle Jacopo's execution tomorrow?
[she had already tossed her vote in for him, but it doesn't hurt to ask]
no subject
Yes. In any case, he has requested to do it himself. I will... have an easier time of it than anyone else, most likely.
no subject
[oh, Lief]
You're definitely one of the strongest people on this island.
no subject
What?
no subject
[?? she doesn't feel that statement needs any explanation]
no subject
[?? he doesn't understand how what he said makes him strong, but.]
no subject
In slightly less despairing news-- [only slightly] -- what should we do about Vriska's close call today?
no subject
[And he doesn't want to suggest that Vriska just kill Zuko—that's too cutthroat for him, considering Zuko is likely innocent, even if it wouldn't obviously make her more suspicious in everyone else's eyes.]
no subject
I think we need to start planning for her getting taken out next weekend. And with Serph, Raven and Battler already gone. . .
[sighs]
The last Siren is turning into our only hope.
no subject
no subject
[shakes her head]
What did Hiro say when you talked to him?
no subject
Of greater significance, however, is that he has a role when convenient—which is to say that he does what Vriska did to Jacopo. If someone approaches him believing that he has a role, he lets them think as they will. He...
[He has to pause, because thinking of Jacopo hurts.]
According to him, Jacopo was under the impression that he was a Wickie. I imagine that is what they discussed last week. In any case, Hiro told me that he in fact has no actual role.
... At the very least, unless he was going to great lengths to misdirect me, I do not think he is a Siren or a Wickie.
[Though there's always the possibility that he's lying, of course.]
no subject
[taps her chin thoughtfully]
I wonder-- even if he isn't Siren or Wickie-- if he has another kind of role. There are still about two unaccounted for, right?
[five sirens, two wickies, a nymph and a waylayer. what are the last two, then?]
no subject
... Indeed. I believe that, regardless, he has good intentions. However, I cannot press him too hard without being expected to give up too much on my end as well.
Still, he and I have agreed to share information, if it is not something that must be kept in confidence. I suppose we shall see if he keeps to that.
no subject
He's a smart kid. Definitely watch yourself around him.
